When the Francis Scott Key Bridge came down in March 2024, the shipping channel closed and a good part of the region's cargo economy held its breath. The recovery since has been genuinely remarkable — volumes are back near record levels — but nobody in the business has forgotten how exposed a supply chain can be, and the rebuild itself is now priced at somewhere between $4.3 and $5.2 billion and not expected to fully reopen until late 2030. In the meantime the ground economy has not waited around. Tradepoint Atlantic, the 3,300-acre redevelopment of the old Sparrows Point steel mill, has already leased more than fifteen million square feet of warehouse and distribution space, broken ground on a billion-dollar container terminal due to open in 2028, and started pushing new logistics parks out into Howard County. The freight keeps moving, and the businesses that move it keep growing.

That economy is not one kind of company. It is the third-party logistics providers running other people's inventory across a leased floor, the freight brokers matching loads to carriers off a screen full of load boards, the drayage and trucking outfits hauling containers off the terminals, the importers and wholesale distributors who bring product in through the Port and sell it on, the cold-storage operators, the customs brokers, the last-mile fulfillment shops. What they all have in common is that every one of them runs on software — and for a surprising number of them, that software is quietly the thing holding the business back.

Where the rented software starts to pull against you

Let me be fair to the tools before I criticize them, because most of them are good. The warehouse-management and inventory market is genuinely strong right now. Extensiv 3PL Warehouse Manager, Logiwa, Fishbowl, Cin7, NetSuite WMS, ShipHero — these are real products built by people who understand fulfillment, and for a lot of operations they are exactly the right answer. The same is true on the freight side, where a broker can run a serious book of business on McLeod, Tai or Turvo, and on the parcel side, where something like ShipStation quietly does its job every day. If one of those tools already fits the way you receive, store, pick, bill and ship, you should keep it. Nobody should commission custom software to do what a subscription already does well, and any honest studio will tell you the same.

The trouble is that "fits" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and in logistics the fit tends to break in a specific, recognizable way. It is almost never a dramatic failure. It is the accumulation of small ones. It is the client whose billing rules — storage by pallet position for one account, by cubic foot for another, with a special handling charge that only applies on Tuesdays — don't map onto any of the templates, so someone rebuilds the invoice by hand in a spreadsheet every month. It is the receiving flow that assumes one barcode per SKU when half your inbound arrives mixed and unlabeled, so the floor works around the system instead of through it. It is the dispatch board that lives in the transportation tool, the inventory that lives in the warehouse tool, and the human being whose actual full-time job has quietly become copying numbers between the two so they don't drift. None of those is a reason to panic, and none of them is a reason to rip anything out on Monday. But they are the tells. The reason this matters financially, and not just operationally, is that logistics software is rarely a small line item, and it rarely stays the size it started at. Stretch that across three or five years — the realistic life of a piece of operational software — and the per-seat, per-order, per-integration meter usually adds up to more than most operators expect, and at the end of it you own precisely nothing. But the subscription is honestly the smaller cost. The larger one is the labor you are quietly spending to hold a slightly-wrong system together: the hours in the spreadsheet that shadows the WMS, the re-keying between the dispatch board and the inventory count, the manual invoice rebuild, the workaround that everyone on the floor just knows to do. That cost never shows up on an invoice, which is exactly why it is so easy to keep paying. A custom system inverts the arithmetic. You pay once to build the thing, you own it outright, and from then on the only ongoing cost is hosting plus whatever changes you actually choose to make. You don't have to take anyone's positioning on faith, ours included. The honest test is not "custom or SaaS" in the abstract — it is a few plain questions about your own operation, and the answers usually point clearly one way.

  • Are you paying people to bridge the software? If a real slice of someone's week goes to re-keying, reconciling or rebuilding what a tool won't do, you are already paying for custom software — you are just paying for it in labor instead of code, and getting nothing you own for the money.
  • Does the tool fit your billing and your process, or do you fit it? When your storage rates, handling charges or dispatch rules have to be flattened to match a template, the template is quietly running your business. That is the exact seam where owning the software starts to pay.
